New Prague students shine in Basic Skills Test
The results of the latest Basic Skills Tests (BST) in math, reading and writing have been tabulated and those results couldn't be more favorable for New Prague Area School students.
Eighth graders were tested in math and reading while sophomores were tested in writing.
Both groups did exceptionally, surpassing the state average by a significant margin.
The eighth graders had a 94 percent passing percentage in reading and 90 percent in math. The state averages in both categories are 85 and 74 respectively.
A total of 97 percent of the sophomores passed the writing test, compared to the 91 percent state-wide average.
"In addition to the remarkable numbers posted by each group, a real measure of the New Prague success can be found by looking at the advancement of the eighth graders," pointed out Maggie Thompson, the district's test coordinator.
In reading, the eighth graders were at 60 percent passing when they were in third grade. That number increased to 79 percent as fifth graders and 87 percent as seventh graders, leading to this year's 94 percent level.
In math, the passing percentage was at 64 when they were in third grade, compared to 75 percent as fifth graders and 85 percent as seventh graders.
Each time the group has been tested, its scores have dramatically increased.
"Test scores are just one measure of excellence for the New Prague Area Schools. We have much for which to be proud. These scores are the reward for dedicated staff, caring families and hard working students. It is a combination for success that defines the region," commented Superintendent, Dr. Frankie Poplau.
