About Health Services

What is School Nursing?

School Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

The primary role of health services in the New Prague school system is to support student learning. The role of The Health Services Director is to be a liaison between education and health care and provide a link between the school, home and community. Some of the different services the Health Service team provides include the following:

  • Illness, injury assessments, intervention, and referrals to health care providers
  • Identification, assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health concerns
  • Health assessments/participation in Individualized Education Plan development
  • Screening for health factors impacting student education - vision, hearing, scoliosis and color blindness
  • Activities and education to promote health and prevent teenage pregnancy, tobacco use and alcohol and substance abuse
  • Medication administration
  • Individualized nursing care plans and Emergency plans and services for students health conditions/disabilities that interfere with learning
  • Presentations on growth and development for the adolescent population
  • Assessment and interventions for students with mental health needs
We are very fortunate here in this District to have Licensed Practical Nurses/Health Paraprofessionals in each of our schools. Having professionals that are able to dedicate their time to promoting student health and wellness is an asset. No one is more important then our children and ensuring that they are safe and healthy during the school day is by far our number one concern.

We are very excited to be part of a team of caring and dedicated professionals. We will continue to advocate for the children of this district, and do our best to keep everyone healthy and safe.
